Roundup: ChatGPT Marches into Real-Time Search
Users can search not only whatever happens to be in OpenAI’s data set, but current news and information, as well.
OpenAI launched a “Google-Killer” search engine, a logical move for the company, which over the last two years has built ChatGPT into a destination website that can locate and organize archived information. Through its chatbot interface, users will be able to search not only whatever happens to be in OpenAI’s data set, but current news and information, as well.
The feature is fully operational. “I can browse the web to retrieve real-time information, answer questions about current events and provide updates on topics beyond my training cutoff of October 2023,” ChatGPT said.
Searching current information isn’t new to the world of AI. Google, for example, has already incorporated AI into its traditional search engine, presenting AI-generated summaries that often save users the need to click deeper when searching.
While Google, OpenAI and Microsoft tend to get most of the attention, a variety of AI-based search engines are available, including Perplexity AI, Microsoft Bing and you.com. Besides handling ad hoc searches, many of these support specific use cases, such as identifying keywords for SEO optimization or improving the tone of a user’s writing.

Wider Impact
In a blog post, OpenAI said its search function “blends the benefits of a natural language interface with the value of up-to-date sports scores, news, stock quotes, and more.” The company said it has partnered with news and data providers to include weather, stocks, sports, news, maps and other information. It also links to source material for the user’s reference.
More important, the ability to search a complete information set through ChatGPT’s chatbot interface is sure to add momentum to the use of chatbots in general. Their growth has already proved dynamic: Since 2019, the use of chatbots has increased 92%. In the realm of customer service, the number of chats per agent rose 23% year-on-year in 2023.
In the 25 years since Google launched, people have gotten used to the idea of easily searching full sets of information. So, the limited nature of OpenAI’s search universe always felt artificial. To the great majority of users, whatever work the company’s done under the hood won’t matter so much as the ability to search an up-to-date set of information.
